Our Story
The Substation Mexican Grill was founded in 2009 in Harrisonburg, Virginia, and officially opened its doors in February 2010 with one clear goal — to serve the community the best Mexican cuisine at unbeatable prices. What began as a creative idea has grown into a local favorite, blending authentic Mexican flavors with a unique American twist.
Originally known as The Sub Station and Ricos Tacos, our restaurant has always been driven by a passion for improvement — from perfecting our fajitas, tacos, burritos, and subs, to enhancing our customer experience across Harrisonburg, Rockingham County, Bridgewater, and Dayton.
Every dish we serve starts with freshness. Our subs are made on bread baked daily, and our meats and vegetables are cooked right in front of you — grilled to perfection with top-quality ingredients that bring bold, unforgettable flavors to your plate.
Our mission is simple: to provide every guest with a welcoming, clean, and friendly atmosphere where great food and good company come together. Whether it’s lunch, dinner, or a late-night craving, we take pride in being one of Harrisonburg’s top-rated restaurants — loved by locals, visitors, and JMU students alike.
Bring your friends and family, explore our menu, and discover why so many call The Substation Mexican Grill the finest Mexican restaurant in Harrisonburg. One visit, and you’ll taste the difference.
